The theory is that Allies will come to each others aid in the event of war, as in real life.

The actual way it works is to prevent one alliance attack another and shows them with green borders. As in real life, allies can become non-aligned or even enemies very quickly if one of the CiC's decides.

NAP's are now similar and also prevent alliances attacking each other. It is best thought of as a truce. Again, if stealing of POI's happen or they want to gain territorial advantage, then a NAP can be stopped by either CiC.

One tactic I've seen early on in a world is where a group ally themselves with another, mix their bases around the other then turn them red (enemy) and attempt to wipe them out. It sometimes works!
